Dr. Ryan Trew (BMus, MMus, DMus)

Ryan Trew is a composer, percussionist, and music theory pedagogue. He has an undergraduate degree in music from Wilfrid Laurier University, a Master of Music from the University of Toronto and he recently completed a Doctor of Music at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

Ryan has an extensive experience teaching Theory, Harmony, Counterpoint, Analysis, Composition, and Music History. As an instructor in high demand, Ryan has been teaching both private and in-group lessons at several music academies and studios throughout the Lower Mainland for over a decade. Ryan’s teaching philosophy reflects a desire to facilitate musical growth and creativity with an approach that is stimulating, challenging and comprehensive. As an instructor, Ryan engages students of all musical abilities, interests and backgrounds in a comfortable learning environment and his students receive top grades in their examinations.

As a composer, Ryan has studied with several important Canadian composers including: Christos Hatzis, Glenn Buhr, and Stephen Chatman. His compositions focus on rhythmic, harmonic and timbral relationships, while incorporating popular styles and classical idioms in unique and unfamiliar contexts. Ryan’s work has been commissioned and performed by several renowned Canadian ensembles including the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Prince George Symphony Orchestra, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony and the Kingston Symphony Orchestra.
